Leonard Bernstein produces West Side Story.

The Hungarian revolution breaks out.
John Osbourne writes Look Back in Anger.

 

YEAR: 1955

The Warsaw Pact is signed.

 

YEAR: 1954

The Salk vaccine against polio is developed.

Ho Chi Minh becomes President of North Vietnam.

Roger Bannister breaks the four-minute mile.

 

YEAR: 1953

Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing climb Mt Everest, they reached the summit on 29 May.

YEAR: 1952

The worlds first jet airliner, the De Havilland Comet 1 went into service. It more than halved international flight times but several tragic accidents led to it's grounding in 1954.

 

YEAR: 1950

The Korean War (1950-53) begins. Troops from NZ serve with the UN forces.

 

YEAR: 1949

The Geneva Convention is signed.

NATO is founded.

Mao Zedong becomes Chinese leader as China becomes Communist. The ousted Nationalist fled to the island of Taiwan.

 

YEAR: 1948

Palestine was split between Israel, Jordan and Egypt. Palestinian Arabs' desire for their own country has caused conflict with the Israelis since.
