YEAR: 1936

Edward VIII abdicates.

The Spanish Civil War breaks out.

The Douglas DC-3 (Dakota) introduced. It could carry 21 passengers smoothly at 320 km/h and was the world's first popular airliner.

The BBC starts to broadcast the first public television service.

 

YEAR: 1935

Francisco Franco becomes dictator of Spain.

George Gershwin's Porgy & Bess breaks new ground in musicals.

Aircraft detection by radar is developed by Robert Watson Watt.

 

YEAR: 1934

Bonnie & Clyde are killed. Between 1932 & 1934 Bonnie Parker and Clyde Champion Barrow went on a crime spree in the US that involved theft, robbery, kidnapping and an estimated 13 murders.
After a major manhunt the FBI and police authorities learned that Bonnie & Clyde would be in Sailes, Louisiana in May. Police officers concealed themselves in bushes and when the criminal's car appeared, they opened fire. Both Bonnie & Clyde died instantly.

The first electric refrigerator is made.

 

YEAR: 1933

The German Nazi Party is established.

President Roosevelt launches his New Deal in the US.

July - Wiley Post made the first solo round-the-world flight.

 

YEAR: 1931

The Empire State Building is completed.

Salvador Dali paints The Persisteace of Memory.

 

YEAR: 1930

Pluto is discovered.

The British airship R-101 crashes into a hillside in France killing 44 peple.

Sir Frank Whittle invents the jet engine.

 

YEAR: 1929

Stalin becomes leader of the USSR.

U.S. Stockmarket crash begins October 24. Investors call October 29 "Black Tuesday". Losses for the month will total $16 billion an astronomical sum in those days. This kick-starts the Great Depression.

 

YEAR: 1928

The world's first airport was built at Croydon, near London. Many airports were social centres attracting large numbers of visitors.

 

YEAR: 1927

Charles Lindberg flies solo non-stop across the North Atlantic in the "Spirit of St Loius," a single-engined monoplane. The flight took off from Long Island on 20 May and landed at Le Bourget near Paris 33 hours and 32 minutes later.

"The Jazz Singer" is the first 'talkie' (movie with sound).

 

YEAR: 1926

Television is invented by Scotsman John Logie Baird.

American engineer Robert Goddard launches the first liquid-fuelled rocket.
