YEAR: 1912

The Titanic, on her maiden voyage, hits a iceberg in the Mid-Atlantic and sinks. The death toll was put at between 1,500 and 1635 passengers and crew.

Robert Falcon Scott dies in the race to become the first team to reach the South Pole, this was achieved by the Norwegian Roald Amundsen who arrived there a month earlier.

 

YEAR: 1911

Amundsen wins the race to the South Pole.

Maccu Picchu in discovered.

 

YEAR: 1910

The ill-fated Scott expedition leaves Lyttleton on the "Terra Nova" bound for Antartica.

The neon light, used for street lighting advertising signs, is invented.

YEAR: 1909

Peary reaches the North Pole.

July 25 - Louis Bleriot made the first flight across the English Channel in a 24hp monoplane he built himself.

 

YEAR: 1908

In 1908 when Ford introduced the Model T, less than 200,000 people in the US owned cars. Five years later 250,000 people owned Model T's alone. 12 Ford Model T's were shipped to NZ, they were sold for £425 each.

Jack Johnson becomes the first negro heavyweight boxing champion.

 

YEAR: 1907

NZ constituted as a Dominion within the British Empire.

Britain, France & Russia sign the Triple Entente.

The first electrical washing machine is made in the USA.

 

YEAR: 1906

April 18 - San Francisco is devastated by an earthquake measuring 8.3 on the Richter Scale. Over 3,000 were killed.

The first diesel engined locomotive is built.

 

YEAR: 1905

Einstein publishes his Theory of General Relativity.

The manufacture of the first artificial fibre, Rayon, begins in the UK.

 

YEAR: 1904

The first performance of Peter Pan is given.

The fax machine, used for sending pictures down telephone lines, is invented in Germany.

The first Grand Prix motor race is held in France.

 

YEAR: 1903

December 17 - The first documented powered flight is made by the Wright Brothers at Kitty Hawk USA. Orville was at the controls of "Flyer", the flight lasted 12 seconds and covered 37m.
