Tim Berners-Lee of the CERN laboraties in Switzerland invents the World Wide Web.

Osama bin Laden founds Al Qaida.
The North Sea oil rig, Piper Alpha, catches fire and collapses killing 167 of the 225 on board.
December 22 - Pan Am Flight 103 crashed on to the small town of Locherbie, in Scotland. The crash which was the result of a terrorist bomb killed a total of 270 passengers, crew and villagers.

The nuclear power plant at Chernobyl north of Kiev leaks radiation over a wide area from a reactor that exploded .
The Challenger space shuttle explodes after take-off.
YEAR: 1985
'Live Aid'is performed simultaneously in London and Philadelphia on 13 July, edited together and broadcast worldwide. The concept was put together by Bob Geldof after seeing reports of the unfolding famine in Ethiopia. 'Live Aid' is believed to have raised more than £100 million and has done much to shape the idea of 'telethon' fundraising for many different worthy causes.

February 16: The Ash Wednesday Bushfires in Victoria and South Australia claim 75 victims
YEAR: 1982
2 April - Argentinean troops invade the Falkland Islands claiming sovereignty over the the islands. Britian despatches a task force and by the 15 June and after the loss of over 1000 lives the Argentinean forces surrender and the islands are returned to British rule.
20 July - The Provisional IRA set off two bombs in Regents Park and Hyde Park, in central London. The casualties were 8 soldiers killed, 47 people wounded and seven horses were put down.

The first case of AIDS in known in the US, but the virus is believed to have originated in Africa.
12 Aug - The IBM Personal Computer is released.
