Team NZ successfully defends the America's Cup, making it the only country to do so other than the USA.

Canterbury celebrates it's 150th anniversary.

YEAR: 1999

Labour's Helen Clark becomes New Zealand's first elected woman Prime Minister, in coalition with the Alliance and Green Parties. The Greens enter Parliament for the first time with seven seats.

The All Blacks are defeated 43-31 by France in the semi-final of the Rugby World Cup

The much vaunted Y2K computer bug, which was feared would cause chaos throughout the world, turned out to be a non event when not one fault was reported worldwide.

The Orbiter bus service begins.

Protestors delay the state banquet for Chinese President Jiang Zemin.

US President Bill Clinton visits NZ.

The legal drinking age is lowered from twenty to eighteen.

Sian Elias becomes NZ's first woman Chief Justice

YEAR: 1998

Auckland CBD was hit by a power breakdown that lasted for over a month and results in an enquiry into the supplier Mercury Energy.

The Black Ferns, NZ woman's rugby team win the world championship title.

Addington Prison closes.

Lancaster Park is renamed Jade Stadium.

Gerry Moore replaces Vicki Buck as mayor.

The Paralmpic Swimming Championships are held at QE2

 

YEAR: 1997

After a leadership challenge, Jenny Shipley replaces Jim Bolger as leader of the National Party and becomes New Zealand's first woman Prime Minister.

The King Edward Barracks are demolished.

The Ch-Ch Convention Centre, New Brighton Pier and the Heart Unit at Christchuch Hospital open.

Ngai Tahu settles with the Crown.

Jack Hinton, VC and Ngai Tahu kaumatua Ropata Stirling die.

YEAR: 1996

First General Election in New Zealand under the MMP system.

Ngai Tahu reaches agreement with the Government on the Waitangi Tribunal claims.

Peacock Fountain resurrected.

Ch-Ch's population reaches 313,969.

Centennial Pool is demolished.

Rob Hall dies on Mt Everest.

YEAR: 1995

28 April - The viewing platform at Cave Creek in the Paparoa National Park collapses falling 30 metres into the ravine below. 13 students on a field trip from the Tai Poutini Polytechnic in Greymouth were killed along with the Department of Conservation Punakaiki Field Centre Manager. The other 4 students on the platform at the time were injured, some very seriously.

NZ and the Black Magic boat, beat the USA to win the America's Cup, the worlds oldest sporting trophy.

The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh visit.

The city centre tramway opens.

John Britten dies.

The World Golden Oldies rugby is held and the Ch0Ch Arts Festival is launched.

 

YEAR: 1994

The Fortex Meat company collapses.

War Hero Charles Upham dies.

Lee Tamahori's 'Once Were Warriors' and Peter Jackson's 'Heavenly Creatures' premiered. Jane Campion's 'The Piano (1993)won three Academy Awards - Holly Hunter for Best Actress, Anna Panquin for Best Supporting Actress, and Campion for Original Screenplay

YEAR: 1993

National party, led by Jim Bolger, narrowly wins election. Referendum introduces MMP.

The number of those 'seeking jobs' reaches 280,000, the highest since the 1930s.

Former National Cabinet Minister Winston Peters forms the New Zealand First Party.

A new Ch-Ch railway station is built.

Peter Ellis is found guilty and sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Gary Ball dies on Mount Everest.

John Britten announces a tramway and shop development connecting Worcester and Gloucester streets.

Speed cameras are used on Ch-Ch roads.

 

YEAR: 1992

August 28 - Cantabrians awoke to find their region blanketed in snow. ‘The Big Snow', as the 1992 storm came to be known, was the region's worst for 30 years, killing more than a million sheep and costing farmers $40 million.

Skier Annelise Coberger wins a silver medal at the Winter Olympics.

The Gondola is inaugurated.

Four Civic Creche staff are arrested in a child-abuse case.

 

YEAR: 1991

The council starts planning for the redevelopment of the Square.

Worcester Boulevard is revamped.
