A referendum favours Prohibition - until soldier's votes come in from overseas ans swing the decision against by only 10,365 among more than half a million votes.
Ch-Ch metropolitan population reaches 100,000.
February 1 - NZ's first commercial aviation accident. Chief instructor C M Hill killed in crash of a Canterbury Aviation Company biplane near Riccarton racecourse.
The school dental service was set up.

November 6 - Beginning of the influenza epidemic which was eventually to kill 466 people in Ch-Ch. Worldwide the epidemic was responsible for approximately 20 million deaths and of these, in excess of 6,700 died in NZ.

EMERGENCY LANDING
In the NZ REFEREE of 23rd January 1918 it was reported:
“At eleven o’clock last Thursday morning when the NZ Metropolitan track was practically deserted by trainers an unexpected visit was paid to the grounds by Mr C M Hill the well-known aviator of Sockburn who, owing to engine trouble at an altitude of 2000 feet, found it necessary to descend to the Grounds. As the trouble could not be repaired on the spot the machine was later taken to Sockburn by lorry to receive attention.”

May 7 - Canterbury Aviation Company (founded the previous year by Henry (later Sir Henry) Wigram) makes first flights from Sockburn Aerodrome, NZ's first airport. Previously the home of the Plumpton Park Trotting Club.
December 1 - As a contribution to the war effort 6pm closing of hotels was introduced. This legislation was to remain in force until 1967 when the licensing hours were extended to 10pm.
Conscription includes Maori for the first time.

February 23 - Red Cross Society (NZ Branch) and the Central Council of the Order of St John hold their first meeting in Christchurch.

April 1 - First regular supply of electricity from Lake Coleridge received in Ch-Ch.
May - First electric street lights in operation.

5 August - War declared by NZ.
24 August - Large patriotic procession boosts war fever.
29 August - Samoa. Unopposed landing by 1413 troops.
23 September - First Canterbury contingent sails on "Tahiti" and "Athenic" from Lyttelton for the war in Europe.
16 October - Main Body sailed from Wellington. It consisted of 4 battalions infantry, 4 mounted rifles regiments and an ammunition column. 8,417 troops in total. The troops reached Egypt on Nov. 3.
2 November - Riccarton (Deans) Bush presented to the city by the Deans family.
The Sun newspaper appears, using up-to-the-minute design, including photographs.
'Hinemoa' the first NZ-made feature movie, premiers at Auckland's Lyric theatre.

October 31 - National waterfront strike affects Lyttleton.
November 5 - "Battle of Featherston Street" in Wellington as strikers try to stop racehorses being shipped to Christchurch.
