CANTERBURY PARK TROTTING CLUB

YEAR: 1899

C S HOWELL

"Founder" of the Canterbury Park Trotting Club. If any one man deserves credit for the foundation of the Canterbury Park Club then it must be one Charles Selby Howell. It was Mr Howell who led the enthusiastic band of supporters who rescued the Plumpton Park Club from certain obscurity in 1889, the club having gone into recess after the scandal of the July meeting in 1888.

Mr Howell was listed as the club's treasurer, secretary and chairman in the early days, serving a two-year period as president (1899-1901) and returning to that position for 11 years from 1909-1920.

Born in 1836 in Stroud, Gloucestershire, Mr Howell was educated at the Red Coat Parish School, of which his father was schoolmaster and parish clerk for more than 50 years. Mr Howell was brought up as a saddler, following his trade in Bristol, Bath, Penzance, Birmingham, Oxford, London and several towns in South Wales.

He left England for New Zealand in 1859 and arrived in the 'Roman Emperor' at Lyttelton a year later. Nine months later Mr Howell moved on to Sydney and worked there for three years before returning to Christchurch where he worked as foreman for Mr C Angus until 1864 when he began a partnership with Mr William White.

This partnership lasted for only 18 months when Mr Howell opened a shop in Tattersalls , which he carried on as a successful business until 1895 when he sold out to his two eldest sons. Mr Howell was a staunch supporter of racing and trotting from his early days, influenced to some extent, no doubt, by his business interests as a saddler.

He died on May 1921, aged 85.

1894 PLUMPTON PARK RACING & TROTTING CLUB: WINTER MEETING

Handicapper - Mr W White. Starter - Mr H J Derret.

Delightful weather favoured the Plumpton Park Racing & Trotting Club for its winter trotting meeting on Saturday, and there was a large attendance.

The sport was of a decidedly interesting character and strong fields went out in most cases. Mr Mace's colt Brooklyn was again the hero of the gathering: Vim trotting as she has never trotted before just beat him in the Sockburn Handicap, but he registered a great performance in the race as he covered the two miles in 5min 18 18 1/2sec, time that has not previously been equalled in harness. On his second appearance Brooklyn scored most decisively, this being in the concluding event, in which he left the mile behind in record time.

Miss Poole found a tough rival in the Maiden Saddle Handicap in Norman, who, going to the front at the outset, defied catching. Mr Friedlander's mare got out of the maiden class later in the afternoon by annexing the Recovery Handicap in fast time. The pony Maude V fairly wore down the favourite in the principal saddle race, and won easily in the end.

The sum of £1760 was passed through the totalisators during the afternoon. The management was as usual excellent, and there were no disputes to mar proceedings. The catering was in the hands of Mr J Buggey and gave the utmost satisfaction.

Starlight went in the air at the far turn, and allowed Maud V, who had given Doll the go-by, to get closer, and as they wentdown the back the mare closed on the leader, and at the home turn was on terms, and coming away in the straight won by eight lengths: Doll a fair third. Time 5min 29sec. Dividend - £6 10s.

Brooklyn, however, had made up a lot of leeway, and trotting in grand style was running third. Vim kept her pace as regards M.M but Mr Mace's colt gradually drew up and passed M.M befoe the final bend was reached; he, however, failed to reach Vim, who passed the post two lengths to the good.
