1894 CANTERBURY TROTTING CLUB: WINTER MEETING

The weather accompaniments to the Canterbury Trotting Club's meeting yesterday were all that could be desired, and the expectation of a thoroughly successful gathering was fulfilled to the letter. Indeed, the meeting may be set down as the best trotting reunion held in or about Christchurch, and those present had the satisfaction of witnessing some of the finest exhibitions of trotting that have been seen in New Zealand.

The attendance, if not a record one, was, at all events, nearly as good as at any previous meeting on the Showgrounds. As usual, the management was first class, and happily there was but one trivial protest.

The elimination of Yum Yum from the Addington Plate robbed the race of a little interest. The finish, however, between the mare's stable companion and Miss Poole was very exciting, for after the latter had caught and passed Ike in the straight, the gelding came again and gained the verdict by a little more than a head.

The stallion race too was robbed of some excitement by the refusal of Kentucky to leave the mark, and his rival was well ahead before Farrar got his horse going. It was found, however, that Imperious, who was lacking the condition of the other two, had been under-estimated by the handicappers, and he succeeded in keeping in front to the end, winning from Specification by three and a half seconds.

The latter made ample amends by securing the three-mile-race, covering the distance in 7min 35 1/2sec, which reduces by a big lump all New Zealand records for the distance. Keith and his horse were loudly cheered on coming up the straight.

Another record was established when the great Yum Yum came out in the Electric Stakes, and cutting down her opponents very easily, ran over the mile in 2min 27 1/2sec. The track was in splendid order, as may be supposed, for the making of fast times.

During the day the sum of £2856 was passed through the totalisators, being the largest sum handled at a winter meeting.

Vagary, the favourite, left his mark badly, and before rounding the first turn was some lengths behind Bunthorne and Ruby, but joining the latter before the end of the first round led, Bunthorne breaking repeatedly falling back. Vagary and Ruby broke alternately, and Bunthorne settling down caught the pair in the third round. Ruby then dropped back, and Mallow ran into second place, but was unable to reach Bunthorne, who won by seven seconds, the rest headed by Rosewood distanced. Time, 5min 55sec. Totalisator, £418 10s. Dividend - £6 16s.

WINTER HANDICAP (in harness) of 45 sovs; second 5 sovs from stake. Two miles.

Mr Mulholland's blk g Hollywood by Young Irvington, 5yrs, 25sec (W Kerr) 1.

Peppermint 10sec, Geordie II 12sec, Virginia 13sec, Bit o' Blue 14sec, Seawood 16sec, Jeanette 24sec and Dingo(late Mountain Lad) 26sec also started.

Hollywood passed Jeanette going down the back, and passing the post the first time held a clear lead. Peppermint being in third place. The latter drew rapidly on the leaders in the second lap, and with a mile gone had made up the best part of her handicap; she, however, broke badly at the top turn on the third round, and Hollywood getting away was not afterwards troubled, winning easily by 100 yards. Time, 5min 59sec. Dividend - £1 14s.

ADDINGTON PLATE HANDICAP of 80 sovs; second 10 sovs and third 5 sovs from the stake. Two miles.

Hippias 38sec and Doll 38sec also started.

With Ike well in front of Shamrock and Miss Poole the race had narrowed itself down to those three when the first lap had been completed. At the mile post Ike was travelling well within himself in front, the two mares being in company some forty yards away. Just after this Shamrock lost her place through getting in the air. Passing the post the third time Ike was going so well that he seemed to have the race in hand, but Miss Poole steadily drew on him, and as they were rounding the home turn the gelding broke and Miss Poole got in front. Ike, however, coming again, got up on the post, and won by a head and neck. Time, 5min 35sec. Dividend - £2 4s.

FIRST SIRES STAKES HANDICAP (in harness) of 50 sovs; second 10 sovs from stake. Two miles.

Kentucky refused to leave the mark, and when Specification got going Imperious, making the best of his handicap, held a strong lead. At the mile the son of Director had come back very little to the scratch horse, while Kentucky had given up the hopeless stern chase. In the last round Specification closed up on the leader, but in no time endangered his chance, Kerr driving Imperious past the post a winner by ten lengths. Time, 5min 21sec. Dividend - £2 4s.

SELLING HANDICAP (in harness) of 30 sovs. Two miles.

Harlequin at once going to the front, was never headed, and won easily. Dividend - £12.
A protest was lodged against the winner for galloping, which was dismissed. Harlequin was bought in for £9.

When a mile had been covered Springfield was in front, while Kentucky and Specification, who had been travelling at a great pace, had drawn very considerably on the leaders. Shortly after passing the mile post Kentucky got in the air, and Specification went passed him. At two miles Springfield was the only one in front of Specification, who got to the front at the turn out of the straight commencing the last lap, and going on finished alone. Time, 7min 35 1/2sec. Dividend - £3 6s.

ELECTRIC HANDICAP (in saddle) of 50 sovs; second 5 sovs and third 3 sovs from the stake. One mile.

Yum Yum caught The Frog at the bottom turn on the last round, and won, pulling up, by fifteen lengths. Time, 2min 27 1/2sec. Dividend - £2 8s.

PONY SADDLE HANDICAP 0f 25 sovs. Two miles.

The sou-west rain of Friday night made the track heavy and slippery for the Canterbury Trotting Club's Meeting. Though the day was bright there was a cold wind blowing, and this, no doubt, kept many people away. There was, however, a fair attendance.

Before the races started Mr Friedlander applied to be heard with reference to his nominations, but the Committee decided that they had been insufficiently addressed, and consequently they objected to allowing his horses to start. Mr Friedlander put in a claim to be allowed to start them notwithstanding the decision of the Stewards present.

The trotting throughout was of a rather mixed order. Owing to the breaking of Coronella and Spinaway in the Maiden Erin's Hope probably owed her victory. In the Handicap Pony Trot May failed to show form she has previously done, and Parnell, who was dressed in his best, travelled throughout faster than any one of his bigger opponents, and won easily. Berlinda and Tennessee, daughters of Berlin, finished first and second respectively in the Telegraph Handicap in harness, and Blue Gown secured third place on sufferance.

The Addington Plate Handicap, in saddle, proved the foregone conclusion it was voted for Nilreb, who had Marahuna caught at the end of a mile. The most interesting event of the day was the three-mile harness race, won by Sonny, who, with JM, had all their work cut out to make up their ground on some of the leaders, though Sonny had the race won half a mile from home. An exciting finish between Coronella and the Auckland pony Shamrock III, wound up the afternoon's sport.

Erin's Hope went to the front early, and kept the lead all the way, though twice closely pressed by Coronella, who broke up and spoilt her chance, and finished four lengths away. Spinaway, who broke repeatedly at the early part of the race, 70yds away, Idaho fourth. Time, 6min 28 1/2sec. Dividend - £3 11s 6d.

Timbuc led from the first to the end of the third round, when Shela drew level, and first one and then the other was in front, but both broke in the fourth round and let in Elsie Gay, who, after a fair trial of pace with Timbuc, shook him off. JM and Sonny in the fifth round closed on Elsie Gay, and Munroe, who drove very patiently, then took Sonny to the front and won finally by fifty yards, JM who was not handled in the same workmanlike manner as the winner, after a good set-to just beat Elsie Gay for second place. Timbuc fourth. Time, 9min 8sec. Dividend - £1 14s 6d.

ELECTRIC STAKES HANDICAP (in saddle) of 25 sovs; second 5 sovs from the stake. One mile.

Coronella went away in capital style, and soon overtook Unknown and Jess II, and led the last half a mile. Shamrock III who began rather badly, finished up the straight in good style, and only failed by the shortest of heads; a poor third. Time, 3min 1 1/2sec. Dividend - £7 7s 6d.

A protest was entered against Coronella on the ground that she had shown a reversal of form on her maiden effort. It was argued that a change of riders, the improved state of the track, and an alteration in shoeing had contributed to Coronella's success, and the stewards rightly disallowed the protest.

£1354 was passed through the totalisator.

1892 CANTERBURY TROTTING CLUB: OCTOBER MEETING

Quite one of the most successful gatherings held under the auspices of the above-named Club was that of Saturday last. The day was delightfully fine, almost too warm, and although there have been larger assemblages at some of the previous trotting meetings on the ground the attendance was more than an average one.

The President of the Club was conspicuous by his absence; he has not yet returned from Wellington, but all the other officers were in their places, and the management left nothing to be desired. The sport was of a superior kind. It was expected that fast time would be put up; the breaking of records was, however, not looked for, and when Miss Hilda reduced the time for the two miles in saddle, and Parnell gave further evidence of what a wonderful midget he is by clipping a few seconds off his previous long distance performances, the spectators were more than satisfied, and hailed both the winners mentioned in the heartiest manner.

The opening fell to Oakland, a full brother to Kentucky, who never gave his opponents a ghost of a show, and the same horse easily accounted for the mile saddle event in both his races, being well handled by young Edwards. The dual victory of Oakland was very popular, the more so from the fact that such a thorough going sportsman as "Mr H Fear" has been hitherto singularly unfortunate. The collapse of the sulky to which Pride of Erin was attached lessened the interest in the Telegragh Stakes, as the mare might have made a fight of it with the winner.

Starting at a fine, even gait, Miss Hilda gradually overhauled her opponents in the class saddle event, and in the end came home alone, eclipsing Calista's record for the distance by half a second. Following on this meritorious performance came Parnell's victory, the public's little favourite - not the machine favourite on this occasion, for his backers received the best dividend of the day - just gaining the verdict, covering the two miles well under even time.

The running of Jess II in the concluding event, which was annexed easily by Locket, was deemed so unsatisfactory that Craw, the rider, was bought before the Stewards, who, after hearing what he had to say, severely cautioned him.

The sum of £1988 represented the operations of the totalisator.

At the mile post Pride of Erin was leading, but a short distance further on Colonial got up and a collision occurred, in which Pride of Erin's sulky came to grief. Colonial was hard pressed by Stonewall Jackson, but maintained the lead to the end, winning by four lengths. Time, 6min. Dividend - £3 13s.
A protest lodged against the winner for foul driving was dismissed.

STEWARDS' CLASS SADDLE HANDICAP of 80 sovs; second horse 10 sovs from the stake. Two miles.

Mistake led for over three-quarters of a mile, when Patience got in front. On the last round, Miss Hilda, who had been coming steadily through, passed into the lead, and won very easily. Time, 5min 21 1/2sec. Dividend - £3 9s.

PONY SADDLE HANDICAP of 20 sovs; second 2 1/2 sovs from the stake. Two miles.

May got to the front on the second roundand led till passing the post the third time, when Parnell ranged alongside; the two kept close together all the way round, and in a most exciting finish Parnell won by half a length, May breaking on the post. Time, 5min 57 1/2sec. Dividend - £5 7s.

Mistake and HRH kept close together for a mile, when the latter drew away, and trotting in fine style soon obtained a commanding lead, and maintaining an even gait all through, won very easily, distancing the others. Miss Hilda broke up badly. Time, 8min 54 1/2sec. Dividend - £2 3s.

1888 CANTERBURY TROTTING CLUB FIRST MEETING

The first meeting of the recently-formed Canterbury Trotting Club was held at the A & P Association's Grounds this afternoon. The weather was very favourable, and the arrangements on the ground appear to be excellent, but the attendance was not large at the commencement of proceedings, but increased as the afternoon progressed. The following are results received up to the hour at which we went to press :-

MAIDEN TROT (in saddle) of 20 sovs. About two miles.

Jane went to the front immediately the word was given, and during the first round established a lead of ten lengths, Misfortune, Dexter, and Hard Times following in that order. There was little change until beginning the second round, when Jane eased up, and Dexter began to catch the leader. A most exciting race ensued, and Dexter catching the favourite in the last dozen yards made a dead heat, Blue Gown, who broke repeatedly, a fair third. It was decided to run off the dead heat, Dexter winning.

Time 6min 7 1/2sec.

The third meeting of the Canterbury Trotting Club was held at the Agricultural and Pastoral Association's grounds, Addington, this afternoon. There was a fair attendance, and the track was in good order.

The following are results received up to the hour at which we went to press. (NB - The handicaps are behind scratch):-

MAIDEN TROT (in saddle) of 20 sovs. About two miles.

Mr A Grimmer's blk g Mosquito, aged (F Angus) 1.

Mr F Horner's w m Snowball, aged (Owner) 2.

Shuttle, Lady Emma, Kitty, Bachlieu, Guida, Anger, Wildacre, Sutton, Emulation, Jack, Midge & Pat also started.

Midge and Bachlieu led for three rounds alternately, Emulation looking dangerous. At the fourth turn round Mosquito came out and won very easily by several lengths, the rest pulling up.

Time 6min 18sec. Dividend - £5 3s.

HANDICAP PONY TROT (in saddle) of 15 sovs. Height, 14h 1in. About two miles.

Tiny soon went to the front, Emily and Maori Maid next in attendance. Emily looked dangerous coming up the straight, but broke and was beaten by four lengths, the mare a fair third, the rest beaten off.
